Vacation: Star Island, Bahamas
Star Island is going to be the first of its kind – a completely carbon-neutral resort. “Star” stands for “sustainable terrain and resources”. Everything on the island is going to be powered by solar, wind, and current (via underwater turbines). It is a small island (35 acres) in the Bahamas that started out with nothing other than sand and trees. Now, the resort is nearly complete. There will be a hotel and several condos to start off with. Each building on the island will have a photovoltaic roof and a wind turbine to generate its own power. There is also a lagoon for collecting water runoff from the land, herb gardens, and wastewater and garbage treatment. They are even going to have a non-fuel marina where electric boats can plug-in! This resort will have absolutely no dependency on external power or resources. Portions of the island will also be used to grow its own food.
Furthering the eco-friendly theme, educators will be staffed on the island to show guests how to incorporate green technology and habits into their own lives. All of this self-generated power is enough to run all the building on site, including a full-service spa and fitness center. There will be about 20 bungalows which include a private plunge pool and seaside terrace. The hotel villas are another option which have features like full kitchens, balconies, and infinity edge pools.
Sound nice? I want to go right now!
If you want to get away from the world and live green for a while, I can’t think of a better place to unwind and relax with the knowledge that you are having virtually no impact on the environment.
