Vacation: Genting, Malaysia

Genting

Genting is called the “city of entertainment” and is located in Malaysia.  This huge resort is located on a mountain peak in the Titiwangsa Mountains.  It is so big, in fact, that one of the hotels, the First World Hotel, holds a Guinness World Record as the world’s largest hotel with over 6,000 rooms!  I say one of the hotels because there are about 10 on location.

Getting up to the mountain peak is an adventure in itself.  You can either take the world’s fastest cable car which gets you up there in about 20 minutes, a helicopter, or take the long winding road up the mountain.  Once you get up there, you’ll understand why they call this the “City of Entertainment”.  Just to give you an idea of how big this place is, it covers an area larger than that of Central Park, New York and has a population bigger than Atlantic City!  They can usher through about 20 people every minute upon check-in due to all the registration desks.  On site, they have the following attractions:

  • golf courses (plural)
  • shopping malls (plural)
  • Two theme parks (indoor and outdoor) featuring:
    • Sky Venture – A sky diving simulator
    • Snow World – a winter wonderland with actual snow
    • Flying Coaster – a hang-gliding roller coaster
    • X-pedition Wall – Rock climbing
    • Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum
  • 6,000 capacity amphitheater
  • International Showroom for theater productions
  • 2,000 capacity Pavilion Hall for concerts, dance, or sporting events
  • Two movie theaters
  • A bowling alley
  • The only casinos in Malaysia (2 of them)
  • Over 90 restaurants
  • A gondola ride on an indoor river

Did I mention this place is big?  The view of the country from this location has got to be spectacular.  The Highlands are about 1850 meters above sea level!  This place apparently also hosts several popular TV shows in Malaysia including Malaysian Idol, MTD Asia Awards, and Star Idol Malaysia.  The temperature up there isn’t all that bad.  It averages about 16-24 Celsius (60-75 Fahrenheit) all year round.

The only bad points I’ve discovered is that the nightlife is limited and the food is overpriced.  However, if you are making the trip to this facility, hopefully money is not a huge factor :-)   Most people seem to flock here for the casinos since you can’t legally gamble anywhere else in Malaysia.  So, if you are looking for a very unique vacation experience, give this behemoth of a resort a try!
