Vacation: Camping in Allegheny State Park

Here’s a fun vacation if you are into camping. Allegheny State Park in Pennsylvania has some great campgrounds. I’m sure they are all pretty good, but I’m going to review the “Willow Bay” campground since I’ve stayed there in the past. It is a campground where you can choose a spot that contains a picnic table, fire ring, and tent pad. They have a building on site that provides toilets, water fountains, hot water showers, and a trailer dump station. So, it is not 100% ruffing it, but close enough. They have 4 individual areas, some are tent-only while others allow RVs.
You can go boating, water skiing, swimming, or fishing if you want because there is a concrete boat launch there with a dock. There are also lots of trails around for hikes, including the North Country National Scenic Trail. If you are into bird watching, the area provides excellent wildlife viewing. While you are here, why not do a little Geocaching? There is a web site that identifies treasure caches all over the country. These are basically containers of small trinkets that you are supposed to find, take something out, and then replace it with something else. You then go back onto the web site to mention what you took and what you added. You need a portable GPS to be able to find the caches. There are caches all over this particular area and this activity can give your hike a purpose (if you need one)
This is a great place to go and just get away from everything for a while. If you are craving a little excitement, Willow Bay is only about 2 hours from Niagara Falls. You can head up there for a day or two and then come back to the campgrounds to finish off your trip. So, unplug for a while and go camping!
