Vacation: Mammoth Cave National Park, KY
Interested in a unique adventure? Take a trip to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. This is definitely on my list to visit someday. It is the longest cave system in the world (365 miles explored thus far) and is very stable due to the thick limestone strata capped by a layer of sandstone. Each year, several more miles are discovered. They have a variety of tours available for everyone – whether you want a leisurely walk or a vigorous, athletic hike. Here is just a sampling:
- underground boat tour
- crystal onyx cave tour
- Wild Cave tour (free-climbing and crawls through tight areas, over rocks and dirt, and through wet areas)
- Snowball tour (gypsum lined ceiling viewed after descending 200 steps)
- River Styx Cave tour (follows course of water to see cave development – covers the entire Historic Tour route)
- And much more…
Visitors see plenty of stalactites, stalagmites, canyon passages, elliptical tubes, sculpted shafts, gypsum, underground hills, large rooms, and drip-stone formations. The surround area also has a lot of activities including camping, horseback riding, trails, boating, and sightseeing.
If you want to see some impressive cave systems, why not just cut to the chase and visit the world’s best!
