Vacation: Space Camp
![]()
Are you a kid at heart? Ever wondered what it would be like to be an astronaut? Do you have any kids that are interested in this? If so, then Space Camp is for you. I have to admit, I ran through their adult program when I was younger and it was a lot of fun! I was actually the second youngest person there and I was in my 20’s! When I went, it was a week long and you got to stay in what they called the “Habitat” that looked a lot like a space station. We got to use flight simulators, run through mock missions, and got to play roles in Mission Control, the orbiter, and the space station. We also got to use some equipment for “training” such as the “Five Degrees of Freedom” chair, a multi-axis spinner and an anti-gravity chair. We even got to Scuba dive to simulate weightlessness!
The most fun was near the end where they take you on a mission involving all three areas (mission control, orbiter, and space station). They throw hazards at you to see how you react. The funniest one was that one of the counselors told the mission doctor to go insane with cabin fever. She actually went up to the cockpit of the shuttle screaming and pushing random buttons. The co-pilot actually had to leave his seat to “restrain” her so that the computer wouldn’t crash the shuttle. It was hilarious!
I highly recommend this vacation for anyone interested in astronomy and/or astronaut training.
